RCH medical team performed the first case of Prenatal Diagnosis of Genetic disorders of the fetus , the first and unique of its kind in the level of services provided in the Eastern Region.
Dr. Samir Omar Abdullah, consultant, maternal and fetal medicine, head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at RCH, confirmed that the hospital received a 35-year-old lady () from one of the Gulf countries suffering from a genetic disease that affects fetal liver during pregnancy and leads to death.
He added that the medical tests were done immediately after knowing her medical history and the mutation causing the genetic disease, where the case was diagnosed and a sample of fluid surrounding the fetus to determine the medical condition, and was found to be in a healthy and uninfected condition. The patient was specified a follow-up plan for pregnancy to ensure a healthy pregnancy until birth.
Dr. Samir stressed that this service was activated recently at RCH where citizens and residents were able to carry out this advanced medical procedure performed by the staff of the RCH Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.
It is worth mentioning that a number of new advanced medical services have been activated at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, including biopsy and placenta tests, amniocentesis, prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases, diagnosis and treatment of fetal diseases, diagnostic examination of fetal heart, fetal ultrasound and quadrilateral examination, treatment of recurrent miscarriage as well as follow-up of twins pregnancy and risky pregnancy.
