The medical team at the Royal Commission Hospital in Jubail led by Dr. Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Tanani, consultant orthopedic surgery, performed two surgical operations to switch the original pelvic joints for both sides with artificial joints for a Saudi woman, aged 41 years.
Dr Al-Tanani, orthopedic consultant said that lady came to the hospital complaining from congenital malformations in the pelvis joints from both sides since childhood accompanied by severe pain and difficulty with movement and since approximately 40 years ago she underwent a left pelvis surgery in another hospital but without positive result. Her condition is getting worse, she checked with several domestic hospitals for treatment but she did not find the right solutions.
Immediately she was subjected to the necessary medical examinations such as CT scan and medical examination and based on the findings decided to perform the surgical operation in two phases due to the difficult situation of being exposured to severe abnormities with no bony walls sufficient in the pelvic bone which are considered necessary to fix artificial joints according to the normal method .
The first operation was to switch the left pelvis joint and which was a success and after eight months replaced the right pelvis joint with success too. After that, the woman underwent specialist rehabilitative treatment at the hospital and was able to walk naturally and without pain, and later she walks without a walking stick .
It is worth mentioning that this operation is considered one of the most complex and difficult operations due to the lack of sufficient and necessary bony walls to fix joints in the pelvis .
