YIC being a forward looking and highly dynamic technical institute has embarked to address emerging technology needs in and around the industrial city of Yanbu. To this effect, YIC has taken initiatives to establish an Industrial Design Centre (IDC). This technology specific center is likely to be the first one in the region to address the technology focused gaps and the possible timely solutions for the industry needs.
In pursuant of the above goals, YIC engaged a team of experts (consultants) from USA to look into the feasibility study of setting up this center, practical constraints (if any), and the technical resources already available in various teaching labs at YIC. The external experts, Mr. Thomas Guttis and Mr. Owen Foster, visited YIC specifically and RCYCI in general on 21-22 March 2016.
On the first day, visitors were given a warm welcome by senior administration at YIC, specifically by Dr. Yaser A. Hadi (Managing Director) and Dr. Abdulaziz Alhulaifi (Deputy Managing Director of Academic Affairs department). The opening meeting was conducted by Dr. Yaser and visitors were given a general presentation highlighting the achievements of the college from the day college was established to this present day.
After the initial get together, visitors were taken to tour the lab facilities mainly in YIC applied building. Visit started from MET facilities through to CHET and EIET departments. Visitors were highly impressed with the technical resources YIC owns in its various labs.
After the lab visit, respective visitors were taken to meet Dr. Ahmed Dabroom, Director General of the colleges and Institutes. Visitors shared their views with Dr. Ahmed in a wide range of academic and industry related issues and scope of future interests.
The day long first day of the visit was concluded in the second sitting of day. This was very much an open ended discussion session. Visitors and senior faculty exchanged views on various matters of interests specifically in the context of setting up Industrial Design Centre in general and IDC’s areas of applications at large.
On the second day, visitors were mainly engaged with senior administration at RCY. They visited the CEO of RCY. The key objective was to explore venues of interests and exchange views in broad technical spectrum and the possible upcoming future projects in the city of Yanbu.
A short technical visit to YUC campus, research center, technology transfer center, specifically the fab lab was also taken up. The visitors were highly impressed with the modern tools and equipment available in various labs. A panel discussion with YUC team was organized to explore areas of mutual interest surrounding the interior design focused activities. The key purpose of the discussion was to explore available skills, expertise and technical know-how pertaining to interior design knowledge out there. The meeting was promising and ended with a note to continue further interaction and share the common points of interests in coming days and weeks.
The second day activities were summed up in a joint session with senior management at YIC. The visitors gave a power points presentation mainly on general areas of interest. It was also formalized that the visitors will stay in contact with colleagues at YIC and final feasibility report will be shared with YIC sometime in April 2016.
The visit was finally concluded on a positive note – mainly to seek benefit from the visitors’ experiences in establishing new programs and centers of excellence.
