His Excellency Eng. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Salem, President of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, inaugurated yesterday the discussion sessions of the Sixth International Conference on Learning Cities 2024, hosted by Jubail Industrial City from December 2 to 5, and organized by the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities.

The conference, which brings together a distinguished group of experts, decision-makers, and representatives of governments and non-governmental organizations from around the world, highlights key challenges and opportunities in the fields of sustainable education and climate action.

The first working session discussed partnerships aimed at effectively promoting lifelong learning for climate action, focusing on the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to enhance lifelong learning and achieve tangible impact in climate action within urban areas. The session also presented strategies for unifying efforts through innovative partnership models, resource sharing, and policy alignment.

The second working session addressed the topic of promoting health in urban areas, focusing on how to integrate health education into urban planning to create healthy and sustainable cities and enhance population well-being amid climate challenges.

The conference also witnessed the launch of four parallel working sessions, including Learning for Local Impact and the Power of Community Learning Centers in Promoting Green Communities, which highlighted the importance of these centers in advancing sustainable development and local climate action through innovative educational programs; Innovative Financing for Urban Climate Action and Education for Sustainable Development, which discussed diverse financing strategies to support climate education programs and capacity building, with a focus on resource-limited cities; and The Role of Universities in Making Learning Cities Climate-Resilient, which addressed the role of higher education institutions in supporting cities to confront climate change challenges through education, participatory research, and community initiatives.
